Canada to Maine

by Peter Patenaude on January 1, 2013

I have been looking forward to cold weather activities this season, but winter has surely taken its time this year. Coming back from a week in Canada, my trail companion and I were glad to see that snow had made its appearance and was going to stay. The winds were strong today and some roads were covered with drifts of 8 inches of snow at the crown– the trip was made at a slow pace but gave me an excuse to take in more of the scenery. It did not take too much convincing to stop for any photographs, especially when we spotted a rainbow at such an early hour. Luckily, I was not the one in charge of the camera as the cold could be felt through the seals of the doors. Making it home took more time than usual, but slower was safer and more enjoyable. What a way to bring in the new year, with fresh blankets of snow.

As others have mentioned, your photos and words here do a wonderful job capturing these snowy-filled moments. Personally, I love the combination of blue and white white. Happy 2013 to you, Peter!

Another beautiful event captured in words and photos. Thank you for sharing these pieces of your life with us.
BTW, the rainbow is actually a “sun dog”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dog and http://www.weathernotebook.org/transcripts/2000/10/17.html

Joseph- It is a lot of fun to be out in, but can be annoying when it needs to be cleared.
Thank you and Happy New Year to you too!

That last pic is beautiful. I’m envious of your winters there. All that white stuff – can’t remember what that’s called :)

We’ve had plenty of snow so far, up to 50cm….. and then a warm spell hit us. Rain, lots of thawing… snow is almost gone now, but everything was soaking wet and starts to freeze up again. Driving sometimes feels like iceskating with a car!

Ron- It is always disappointing when rain hits during the winter; it ices the roads and melts the snow- I think if it is going to be cold, at least there should be snow. It is funny, we had nothing and then all at once.

Wow! I’ve never seen a rainbow in the snow before. Very cool. I always catch myself longing for the north and an endless blanket of snow for awhile. It just adds a majestic touch to the outdoors. I hope you get out and get some more pictures and ventures to share.

Happy New Year!

Thank you OE- It was a nice scene that did not last long, and I agree, the snow brings a welcomed change to the woods.
I will do my best to document my outings and a very Happy New Year to you too!

Mike- Like a bad guest, it does not show up on time and then does not leave.
Happy New Year to you and yours as well!
